Covid PCR SwabTest – £195
What is the test?
It is a nasal and throat swab to test for Covid-19 Infection. The test is analysed by looking for and identifying DNA fragments particular to the virus (PCR Test).
When should this test be done?
For those that need testing as part of requirements for travel or return to work – For TIME CRITICAL swabs we can only book a morning slot at the earliest possible time in the specific window requested by the patient. We are currently getting results no later than 48 hours (usually 24hrs) after the swab has been done but there may be factors beyond our control, from the time the swab leaves our premises by courier, that may delay the result for which we cannot take responsibility. It is the patient’s responsibility to understand the requirements of the airline or test requiring agency, with regard to timing of the swab test and when results are needed. We cannot give specific advice in this respect.
For those who are CURRENTLY symptomatic with signs of possible COVID infection – The majority of people with COVID-19 have uncomplicated or mild illness (81%), with symptoms such as fever, fatigue, cough (with or without phlegm production), appetite/weight loss, malaise, muscle pain, sore throat, shortness of breath, nasal congestion, or headache. Rarely, patients may also present with diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting. Loss of taste and smell has also been reported early in the infection. The test should be performed preferably within day 1 to day 5 of symptoms. We do not offer on-site Covid tests for patients with CURRENT OR RECENT SYMPTOMS with POSSIBLE COVID. In these cases, we are ONLY able to offer a postal kit for self-testing with a Pre Paid Sample Envelope to be posted directly to the laboratory.
How is the test done?
A dry swab is rubbed against the back of the throat and then the same swab is rubbed in the nostril. This will be a supervised self-sampling at the clinic, and for home samples, clear instruction is provided in the kits.
How long will it take for the results?
Usually within 24-48 hours. The results will be emailed to the patient with the Result Certificate through our secure patient portal.
How accurate are the tests?
The test has a 100% specificity (i.e. the test uniquely looks for the Covid-19 virus) and has 98% sensitivity (in those with the infection, the test can pick it up 98% of the time)
Any drawbacks to the test?
As with all viral PCR tests, patients with very low viral loads are less likely to be detected. ‘Not detected’ results do not preclude infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus and should not be the sole basis of a patient treatment/management or public health decision. Where there is a strong clinical suspicion of an early COVID-19 infection repeat sampling should be considered 24-48 hours later.
What is the cost of the test?
The cost is £195 inclusive of consultation and results interpretation and advice.

Antibody Blood Test – £130
Most patients that have had Covid-19 have been found to produce the IgG antibody. Testing should be done FOURTEEN DAYS OR MORE following exposure or onset of symptoms.
It is not yet known if an individual with a positive result showing the presence of Covid-19 IgG antibodies will be protected, either fully or partially from future infection, or for how long the protective immunity may last. Therefore all guidelines regarding social distancing and personal protection should still be adhered to even if antibody tests are positive suggesting that one has had the infection previously.
Please talk with your Doctor if you have any questions regarding the tests or the implications for the results for you
The results for the Covid antibody test are received within 24 hours of the sample’s arrival at the laboratory and the results will be shared with the patient via email through our secure patient portal.
To book this test please either call Essex Private Doctors on 01277 201001, or if lines are busy, please email [email protected] with your contact details and you will be called back. Payment is taken at the time of booking.
